This is, I think, My favourite of Cull's cartoons.
It so richly embodies the fantasy life of a portly little man in a grey suit, in a government ministry office.
Cull was ever optimistic. I'll bet, in his dreams, he was a demon dancer.
Ever the Optimist!
Haven't heard of this guy until now. I have an excuse, I guess. But I am going to learn about him.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't help but notice these are on notebook paper. Do you have some originals? Or were you a closet tracer like I was when I was 12? :)
So far as I know, You won't hear of Cull from anywhere else, I've found no trace. The drawings are on scraps of blueprints, cardboard, old newspapers, anything that was spare. These were scanned, last night, off the originals.
ReplyDeleteSo far as I know, Cull was an Air-Ministry Draughtsman, who drew his witticisms and pinned them around the offices, not an established, published cartoonist.
I'll bet, in his dreams, he was a demon dancer.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet he was...
It reminds me of something I read in a book, (in a real book, not online) I've long forgotten the actual book, but the context was about a study of dreams. In a chapter about the grandiose aspect of some dreams, the particular dreams of an American Indian Chief of the 19th century, was discussed, expressly, how this Indian Chief was not able to fulfill his "Chiefness" in real life but he killed many rabbits in his dreams.
somehow we just don't see ourselves as old as we are.
