The Corn Exchange, Leeds, was designed by Cuthbert Broderick, and completed in 1863.
On our travels, RDG and I have generally shared photographic duties, and it's hard for either of us to be sure whose is which. As a system, it works well, because we notice different things, and she sees things that I'm too familiar with to notice.
I still think it is a fantastic space! Why don't we build buildings like this anymore ?? Even down to the small details ... Surely you're not taking credit for all those photos... some have the look of a red dirt girl''s hand on the camera.

The company I work for was founded at about the same time as this building, I've read the diaries of the founder from this time, learned of the stunning rate at which industry and technology were hurtling along, but I'm still mightily impressed by the incredible roof of the corn exchange, not a round dome, but an ellipse, and looking as light as an eggshell, with so little visible structure.
ReplyDeleteAs for the photographs? Did I anywhere make any claim for credit? Phooey.
But: I took all the good ones, obviously, and anything that's a bit wobbly or out of kilter belongs to the Red Dirt Girl.

Lovely building.

Lovely pedestrian, too!
ReplyDeleteHow did you manage to get everyone else to leave?
ReplyDeleteAh.... That was a couple of weeks after I ran out of soap....
DeleteWonderful building. There was something a bit like it in London called the Coal Exchange, demolished by a load of vandalistic no-brains in the 1960s. I've seen photos. By the way do you have a followers button? There's the word FOLLOWERS on the side of your blog but nothing else. I am wondering if it is another of those blogger problem things.
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny,
DeleteRe: Followers widget. I had the same problem a few weeks ago here at Soubry's blog. It kept giving me an error message. But on Soubry's end, everything was normal. I'm on a MacBook Pro using Firefox as my browser. Today, everything looks normal with the Followers widget on my computer. So ... I recommend just waiting a few days to see if it resolves itself on your end. A 'Blogger' glitch most likely. Hope this helps

Followers button and little boxes full of followers is on the sidebar here too. I view it in firefox, will check other browsers.
ReplyDeleteChecked: working okay in IE and Chrome, also in Opera Mobile.
No idea about the others... The followers widget seems to be the last bit of the page to load.
As for followers, you're the first person ever...,. EVER! to ask any question whatever about following. I suspect that most of the followers there lost interest long ago, but never got around to deleting me. Anyway, I've been practising all that stuff in the spy novels, glancing round suddenly, looking at reflections in shop windows, crossing the road suddenly and doubling back.... I'm sure if all those people were following me I'd have seen a few by now, hastily pretending to look at their phones, tying shoelaces etc as i turn around.
