I am the grit in the gears, the missing bolt, I am the poker of sticks into spokes. I like to know how things work, but sometimes when I take them apart and rebuild them, I have a few pieces left over. I am a man, so I tend to leave reading the instructions until after it goes wrong. And like all men I have a comprehensive mental map of the world and never need to ask directions. I never get lost, only sometimes I'm late, or end up in the wrong place entirely. It's what we do.

Oh, Let Me Take My Chances on the Wall of Death
Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time
Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time
You can waste your time on the other rides
This is the nearest to being alive
Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
You can go with the crazy people in the Crooked House
You can fly away on the Rocket or spin in the Mouse
The Tunnel Of Love might amuse you
Noah's Ark might confuse you
But let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
On the Wall Of Death all the world is far from me
On the Wall Of Death it's the nearest to being free
Well you're going nowhere when you ride on the carousel
And maybe you're strong but what's the good of ringing a bell
The switchback will make you crazy. Beware of the bearded lady
Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time
Oh let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time
You can waste your time on the other rides
This is the nearest to being alive
Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
Let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
you first, big guy!
ReplyDeleteNot me, I'm on the swings with the redhead!
ReplyDeleteI'm a Richard (and Linda)Thompson fan but I also like REM's version of this song.
ReplyDeleteI'll ride it !
ReplyDeleteEither one ;-)
Um
ReplyDeleteboth bikes, was that?
The young lady on the swing is only imaginary, I'm sorry to report. She's in an archive of fairground posters in Sheffield university.
If she ever existed she's almost ninety years old now.
Holy shit! Mum! Is that you?
But digressing, you're a bike person. The bikes in the picture, now, usually Ken Fox, and his wall, I've seen them a few times, their usual bikes are old Indians, 1926 Indians, to be precise. But here....
I'm thinking Triumph Bonneville, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
I've seen it done on old Mustangs, a fifties version I think.
ReplyDeleteThey're kind of small, but peppy, just what seems to be needed for such an endeavor.
I ride a Harley. But, my bike (pictured) is much too big and slow. It is, however, very nice on the road :-)
