Every new york story involving a taxi, for instance, seems to involve a taxi driver who barely speaks english.
Like my non-genuine taxi.

But I rode in a couple of genuine cabs too. I was fascinated as my drivers, approaching stopped traffic, would zigzag through narrow back streets.
soubriquethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01151288534629885195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555664269648250473.post-68039962415621748412013-08-28T09:13:48.062-05:002013-08-28T09:13:48.062-05:00I swear Soub, that bit about the London cabbies is...I swear Soub, that bit about the London cabbies is as interesting as anything I've read in a while. I've been saving a slush-fund for these related expenses, by giving up, pretty much, going to the pub, and any and all luxuries.soubriquethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01151288534629885195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555664269648250473.post-22289561340332687512013-08-23T13:05:00.631-05:002013-08-23T13:05:00.631-05:00NEVER as in London for a taxi. I checked out the website, and it looks a pretty good deal.
http://www.londonuniversityrooms.co.uk/
I could have stayed across the road for half the money!

As for the Wallace, it's not all armour and girls in swings. Actually, the biggest gallery, with Franz Hals' Laughing Cavalier and Fragonard's Girl on a Swing, was closed for a refurb.
I'd agree, I'm not a Fragonard fan, I don't like all that fussy french frilly stuff. And armour? Well, it's fascinating. Not in bulk though, after a couple, yawn, meh. I've just been reading history stuff about the wars in france, sieges, battles, Agincourt, Crecy, so I was primed to envisage how the opposing sides would be equipped. And how the great weight sapped strength, vision was obstructed, and all in all, I felt scarily claustrophobic imagining being buckled into a tin suit.

There's so much more in the collection, I enjoyed it mightily.
soubriquethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01151288534629885195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555664269648250473.post-73004797606868482692013-08-22T19:28:40.295-05:002013-08-22T19:28:40.295-05:00When I go to London I stay in Bloomsbury in a larg...When I go to London I stay in Bloomsbury in a large hotel whose grim cement architecture reminds me of the Soviet Bloc, not because I like it but because it's affordable. I enjoy the courtyard restaurant at The Wallace, the collection not so much. Most people would beg to differ but I'm just not a fan of coats of armour or paintings of young pink cheeked girls in swings. The setting is splendid though.
